The Independent Newspaper

Independent Newspaper interview

"You have to be prepared to be knifed and head-butted. You have to be prepared to go into the armpits of society to find great music. The best music comes from anger, from paranoia. It's the way out of a situation.

I've found unemployable reprobates and given them a tax liability. As I have proven, you don't need an education to be in the music business," says Stevo, Some Bizzare label supremo, and the man who gave the world Soft Cell, Depeche Mode and The The and currently finds tracks by Einsturzende Neubauten and Test Department, two visionary acts he signed more than 20 years ago, very much in demand with movie directors such as Michael Mann, Alan Parker and Alfonso Cuaron (of Children of Men fame).

"They were all quite radical, even though they're all respected now. Too often, the pioneers get left behind. If you speak to Richard H Kirk of Cabaret Voltaire, he'll tell you all about that. Nine Inch Nails, especially, wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Cabaret Voltaire. It's almost beyond flattery. It's a joke," he says.

But Stevo, who used to trash hotel rooms and record company offices to get his point across - "I had no choice, I just cared about the artist," he stresses - and once sent all the major labels brass phallic objects - "the mould came from a gifted gentleman," he quips - with "Force the Hand of Chance" engraved on the bottom to try to get them to sign Psychic TV, is not exactly mellowing.

Now in his forties, he rarely answers a question without at least telling you an anecdote as well as a story you can't repeat because it's sub judice or the lawyers would have a field day. "I've never been sued by an artist, a publisher or a record company and I've never sued an artist, a publisher or a record company. Unfortunately, that could be classed as an act of weakness," he states a propos of the long-running feuds with Psychic TV and Coil.

"I met these Coil fans in a club and they went mental. This guy was going to kill me because he'd read this Coil book that said they'd never signed a contract with Some Bizzare. I don't know what's in my filling cabinets, it must be Scotch mist. They certainly have signed contracts," he maintains, before going into the ins and outs of another dispute, this time with Einsturzende Neubauten.

Still, maybe all this is to be expected, given Stevo's reputation as a maverick, going back to the early Eighties, when he licenced The The's Soul Mining to three different labels. "I delivered Soul Mining to what was then Phonogram. Then I took it off them, and sold it to Warner Brothers. And before it had been released, I took it off them and sold it to CBS. One recording was sold three times. I can't understand it but I don't regret it," says the wheeler-dealer who possibly outdid the Sex Pistols' Malcolm McLaren.

Back in 1980, Stevo Pearce, then a budding DJ not out of his teens, was asked to compile a chart of the electronic music he played at Billy's in London's Soho and the Clarendon Hotel in Sounds, the weekly music paper. "They called it the Futurist Chart, not me. I used to clear the dance-floor. I would go out for the purpose of doing that. My attitude was complete assault on the audience.

Stevo found himself at the centre of the embryonic electronic scene and was given carte blanche to assemble a collection of acts he was associated with. The Some Bizzare Album, unavailable for 17 years and now changing hands for £100, gathered tracks by Blancmange, Soft Cell and The The as well as Depeche Mode and B-Movie and charted in March 1981.

B-Movie were touted as the next New Romantic act to follow Visage and Spandau Ballet, but "Remembrance Day" and "Nowhere Girl" only made the lower reaches of the Top 75. However, Stevo struck gold with Soft Cell, an electronic duo whose Mutant Moments EP he had championed in Sounds. He became their manager, got them a deal with Phonogram under the Some Bizzare umbrella and their cover of "Tainted Love" topped charts. For 18 months they scored hit after hit with their anguished synth-pop.

Stevo is dyslexic, though that's not the reason behind the spelling of his company's name. "No, I like ambiguities. It's Some Bizzare, spelt B I Z Z A R E. The idea of the label was to be aware of people's expectations and do the opposite almost. Not deliberately. There's nothing more irritating than artists trying to be different for the sake of it."

Today Stevo is taking me around the Some Bizzare Exhibition at The Horse Hospital, in Bloomsbury, London, which is celebrating 25 years of the label. He's showing me the drawing for the 12in single sleeve of The The's " Infected", and various pieces of artwork for Marc And The Mambas releases. "It's all for sale. The walls of my apartment are bare now. I hope they don't fill up again," he says.

Stevo is not one for looking back but agreed to compile Redefining The Prologue - 1981-2006, a Some Bizzare collection for Universal. "I've never done a retrospective album so it's 50 per cent new and 50 per cent old. The whole idea is, you put a kid in a room and play him the album and say: 'Right, you tell me what's 1983, 1984, and what's now.'"

Twenty-five years on, Stevo is still working with Dave Ball, who was one half of Soft Cell, and is "repairing bridges with Marc Almond".

As we end, he says, "Make sure there's nothing too controversial." Then he reaches for my recorder's off switch

Stevo

Remarks by Stevo of the Some Bizarre record label were slightly abbreviated in our article ("Bizarre after all these years", 27 October, 2006). To clarify, he was not saying that he had licensed The The's Soul Mining to three record companies at once, but withdrew the rights from each company before giving it to the next.

Dave Ball - The Grid Live

The Grid are Dave Ball and Richard Norris. They formed in 1988 at the height of Acid House, releasing as their first single, the Balearic classic 'Floatation', in 1990, before notching up a string of increasingly successful albums -'Electric Head', '456', 'Evolver', 'Music For Dancing' - and ten hit singles, including 'Crystal Clear, 'Rollercoaster' 'Texas Cowboys' and the million selling 'Swamp Thing'. The band toured worldwide and remixed and produced numerous artists including Brian Eno, Pet Shop Boys, Happy Mondays and many more.

After a break in the nineties, the Grid reformed in 2004, playing their first gig in a decade in 2006 at the Coronet in London. "DOPPELGANGER" is their first album since 1995, and features the trademark Grid sound - sweeping, atmospheric electronics and hook laden melodies, fast forwarding into the future. A welcome return.

His work with Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart probably makes Gary Lucas the world’s most popular avant-rock guitarist, though his solo work can lack focus.

Here, his solo pieces mingle with tracks recorded with electronic composer James Hunter, aka The Dark Poets, whose samplescapes, synth beds and vocal samples about things like military mind-control techniques recall the dark portents of Cabaret Voltaire.

Highlights include a resonant cover of part of Popol Vuh’s Aguirre, Wrath of God soundtrack; an exhilarating "Judgement at Midnight" incorporating swirling National steel guitar phrases over a synth drone bed pockmarked with found-sound fragments; "Breath of Bones", a delicate tangle of guitar tendrils; and "Ted’s Theme", a lovely sequenced samba-shuffle burnished with glinting guitar.

Solo showcases include the glistening Frippertronic-style guitar tones of "Rosemary’s Baby" and the almost electric-flamenco flurries of "Rise Up To Be".

Music by 'The Dark Poets' (Some Bizarre Records) Here is the internationally multi award winning short film 'Borderline' by visionary director Alex Chandon with music by Some Bizarre's own forward thinking electro outfit 'The Dark Poets' A Version of this track will feature on the forthcoming Dark Poets album currently in production for Some Bizarre records.

Borderline:Short film synopsis Taking London on a trip by way of MC Escher and Mega City One. Deconstructing both modernist and neo-classical landmarks to rebuild a new, impossible cityscape of upside-down staircases, gravity-defying roads and liquid skies. short fact I made the film as an experiment with After Effects. I had been dreaming about mad buildings (Escher meets Mega-City) for a while, that became the vague brief.I went out alone with an XM1 mini-dv camera and a tripod for two afternoons in London, one spent at the south bank centre the other in the city. I shot what looked good with no constructive thoughts to actual compositions of the final shots. The only critical thing was that each shot was 'locked off' for the short takes. Matching the angles and perspectives on elements from different shots was a nightmare. But well worth it! crew director Alex Chandon editor Alex Chandon music The Dark Poets festivals,

RISQUÉ indeed is this fresh and quirky sound that strikes your heart-strings like a bolt of electro lightning! RISQUÉ is Nathalie and Huw, a new and vibrant, French and Welsh combo, wed to each other and their music. RISQUÉ's premiere release is the album TIE ME UP TIE ME DOWN is to be released SOME BIZZARE label RELEASE DATE 2008... So tune-in n chill-out to your FREE ON-LINE MUSIC trax here

Now RISQUÉ are avidly making music in their secret Barcelona studio. Their lavish sound comprises confident and robust driving rhythms, overlade with sweetly exotic and ethereal vocals.

Huw already has a well-established track-record for innovative synth production, with a concatenation of electro chart-toppers, including RUBIKON and ROOKIE.

Nathalie's (who is French as in the movie!) voice is spellbinding, somehow creating a lyrical synthesis of innocence and sensuality. Whats more, she intonates her lyrics in English and français, exuding a romantic pan-European aura.

RISQUÉ

The couple's romantic liaison, together with their music, makes a RISQUÉ story. They met on a rock off the beautiful North Wales coast. To escape any Anglo/French feuding between their parents, the duo ran away on a moonlight-flit to Las Vegas. There they were wed, in the Little Chapel of the West, where Elvis was married in Viva Las Vegas. But the sound of music beckoned from Europe, so the couple returned to immerse themselves and play, in the club and rave scenes of Paris and London.

Arkhaiomelisidonophunikheratos (Some Bizzare)

Reviews

Arkhaiomelisidonophunikheratos? (2010). Another stunningly refreshing album by Satanicpornocultshop. I was introduced to this collective from Osaka a couple years ago and instantly fell in love with their quirky and eclectic electronica. A few years and multiple albums later, they?ve produced this a more laid back body of work that completely owns?

?Puzzling, destabilizing and futuristic hip-hop. One of the main features of this band is that they make music gush from the most arid field recording session. Give a Stanley knife or a red-bear shaped lighter to Ugh, and he?ll make it swing in a snap. Ugh is a real human sampler, a junk sound edit virtuoso. And that is undoubtedly Satanicpornocultshop main strength. Just ad to that an immense musical culture, a taste for ultimate groove and pop music satire, and you will have a pretty good idea of what makes that band so unique? - (Tim Ferguson)

Oct-2010

Satanicpornocultshop ?Arkhaiomelisidonophunikheratos? (Some Bizzare)

As deranged, diverse and compelling as cover and title would suggest. Band hail from Osaka, though this is incidental to their defining achievement: a multiplicity of sound layers pierced by one single breakcore beat making for a destabilisng futuristic hip hop attack, alternating with fried folkery in the female Fursaxa vein.

Accordingly, opener Next Year's Snow lovingly mimics Vashti Bunyan to the point of pastiche. Only gentle glitches give warning of cut-up madness to come. Next up, (R.I.P.) Tide, a psychedelicised mash up of Pentangle's Light Flight, in which we are invited to get our collective freak on, repeatedly. Saddam Fed Bird While Jailed ups the ante on beats and samples and ushers in Stanley knife mayhem of next two tracks, slashing, ripping and pasting multifarious field recordings, riffs and songs and shaping them into howling beast beat monsters. A light and dark pattern emerges as the acid-fried harmonium chill returns with the respite of Glaneurs and Diamond Day hip hop of Pinky (the latter with further exhortations to get our freak on - a given by this point). Thence the breakcore-tastic Custom Drum Destroyer delivers on its title: wholesale lo-fi sample of No Fun mid-way through is nothing short of sublime. Left-handed Darling is twisted J-Pop. 9 Headed Monster begins by asking: "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" - a leitmotif for all this light and dark dialectic bethinks y brawd. So thick and furious are the subsequent breaks that the answer has to be "dazed and confused witch, thank you very much". Things then tail off into pleasing mellowness: a stab at 80s pop with Paradise; more Vashti / Fursaxa shenanigans on Kanariya; Margo Guryan over easy on Nido; a reprise of Next Year's Snow; to finish, a mad big beat electro-debris cover of Francoise Hardy's unassailable Comment Te Dire Adieu.

Easy then to understand criticism from some quarters aimed at the lack of full on breakcore onslaught with this release. However, to these ears the leavening of beats and samples with female oriented chilled out pop and free folkery work their magic. Proving perhaps that nothing is ever entirely black and white.

GL1TCHG0R3 GEARBALL MUSIC VIDEO

GL1TCHG0R3 is unusual in that they are primarily a “virtual’ band formed by Ted Bell and Patrick Chauncey, conceived, executed, marketed, discovered and signed before the two band members ever actually met in person. They formed in June of 2007, and within a few weeks developed a large underground following. GL1TCHG0R3 (glitch - gore) was born out of an experiment to create a new fusion of sound somewhere between hip-hop, improvisational jazz fusion, noise, IDM and glitch. Stumped at how to proceed with this task, they invoked Eris the goddess of chaos through song, art, insanity and an organ donation. The Mother of mechanized music was indeed pleased - so pleased that she plucked out her right eye, and created the most terrifying weapon of mass destruction in the universe to take its place among us. Thus Gearball, also known affectionately as Mister Twinkles, came to become the band's whimsical cyclopean mascot. Travel with Mister Twinkles and his friends through a wild acoustic romp into the depths of cosmic chaos. And if you listen closely, betwixt the screams of the undead and alien tribal rhythms, you'll hear the dancing laughter of Eris grinding away at the humming rotors of creation.

Kontour has been experimenting with electronic devices and voice manipulation for over twenty years. This new album brings forth an array of pure electronics and experimentation. You are being watched everywhere you go; everything you do is being registered.

David Hunt: Kontour

Side-line (UK) Review 2008

Kontour - Scanners (CD Some Bizarre Records)

www.side-line.com

David Hunt aka Kontour is an English artist who has already been active for more than 20 years now. He for sure is a musician who remains faithful to a sort of early electronic tradition reminding me of the 80s. More than once “Scanners” evokes some early and good old Cabaret Voltaire memories. Especially the 2 debut songs are really cool and essential. There’s this brute electronic construction made with instruments like a Moog or MXR effect processor. It creates these typical electronic vibes while the good-old rhythm box percussion sound only reinforce the 80s feeling. The male vocal parts are pretty zombie-like, but totally fitting in to the music. “The Kennedy Syndrome” and “Loose Wire” are definitely strong openers. I’m not affirming that after such a great debut the album slowly stagnates, but it’s just that the other tracks left are less convincing. “Pressure Point” is a track that brings the album again to a higher level. Kontour also reveals a more experimental side, which brings some diversity, but less new high lights. It doesn’t take away that this album will for sure please the lovers of early Cabaret Voltaire and other bands in the same line. (DP:7)DP. #

Kontour - Necromance

The album’s production involved no use of computers but harked back to analogue sequencers and tape machines, creating a sound not at home in the clean digital age we are subjected to. Percussion and rhythm came from a collection of vintage drum machines heavily processed and overdubbed with manually played electronic drums. Recorded voices were left almost inaudible, disappearing into a backwash of distorted phase.

ZGA FIGS

ZGA is a unique phenomenon in Russian post-rock music. There’s never been a band that would for so long, so consistently and with such dogged perseverance and dedication pursue the non-compromised approach to music.

ZGA pretty much equals Nick Sudnick. Throughout countless personnel changes Nick has always been there - the mind, the heart, the soul, the creator and inventor of this unparalleled music.

We first met in the early 80s. The newly born Russian rock strived for lyrical freedom and new spirit, music hardly mattered and in most cases remained quite simple. I, however, craved for weirder and stranger textures. Sudnick was a connoisseur and avid collector of Rock in Opposition and industrial: Henry Cow, This Heat, Test Department, Universe Zero. That was the shape of sound ZGA was aiming at.

“Zga” is a very obsolete, obscure and peculiar Russian word. It means something really miniscule and in the contemporary language it survived only as a part of an expression ni zgi ne vidno - “pitch dark”. ZGA’s music when I first heard it was by no means sounded obsolete but obscure it very well was: asymmetrical rhythms, hardly any melody, distorted guitar paired with Nick’s homemade instruments. They lived in Riga, and in 1986 I was proud to bring this unusual band for their first ever gig in Leningrad, then capital of Russian rock.

In 1991 Sudnick and ZGA moved to St. Petersburg. His studio in the legendary artists commune at Pushkinskaya 10 is a mix between a scrap metal warehouse, where he builds, solders, puts together his countless homemade instruments, and a makeshift recording studio. He’s also a curator of GEZ 21 - Gallery of Experimental Sound, the hub for noise and industrial projects.

Living in Pushkinskaya 10 and working at GEZ exposed reclusive Sudnik to a whole new range of people and ideas. He works on a number of side projects, one is producing an all female band IvaNova. Its drummer Katya Fedorova became a full-fledged ZGA member and brought more accessible and less austere timbres of female vocals, violin and accordion of her fellow band members into ZGA’s later albums.

Katya Fedorova is also a member FIGS, another very special project that is featured on this compilation. FIGS is an acronym that stands for the names of four musicians: apart from Sudnick and Fedorova there are two drummers: Alexei Ivanov and Marcus Godwyn, a Brit who has lived in St. Petersburg for many years now. The resulting band - three percussionists and ever noisy Sudnick with his homemade instruments - is an apotheosis of rhythmic industrial sound.

Jim Thirwell - Foetus

Jim Thirwell - Foetus

Experimental musician Jim Thirlwell has been using the moniker Foetus (and various elaborate derivations thereof) since the early 1980s. Thirlwell's work as Foetus is best described as industrial, yet contains traces of any number of diverse styles that would fall far from industrial's cacophonous aural tree. Using heavy doses of electronic noise and bursts of sampled sound, Foetus remains one of the more challenging projects in music. The prolific Thirlwell has recorded under several other names, including Flesh Volcano, Manorexia, and Baby Zizanie, among others. He's also composed film scores under his own name and the alias Clint Ruin.

FIRST IN A SERIES OF DELUXE FOETUS RELATED RE-ISSUES
In an age when terms like "alternative" and "independent" get bandied about corporate boardrooms as mere mass-market packaging slogans, it takes an artist as rare as Jim Thirlwell (FOETUS) to inject some meaning into what is so casually labeled "the underground." With his history of relentless aesthetic terrorism and committed cultural subversion, Thirlwell is one of the most independent thinkers on the music scene today, a much-needed alternative to "alternative rock" itself. Linking up with Some Bizarre in the early eighties Thirwell adopted the “Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel” moniker for the release of two of his most well know early albums “Hole” and “Nail” in ‘84 & ‘85 respectively. With a collision of electronics, tape loops and harsh beats and vocals these albums helped define the burgeoning underground industrial scene in London at the time. With lovingly restored artwork under direct supervision from Thirwell himself these two albums are now available in deluxe digi packs which do the original LP’s artwork justice like no CD issue has ever done. Both albums have also been re-mastered by SCOTT HULL (Herbie Hancock, David Bowie etc.) to bring out the best in these milestone releases freeing them from the bad CD mastering these titles have suffered from in the past.

FINAL PARTS IN A SERIES OF DELUXE FOETUS RELATED RE-ISSUES

With his history of relentless aesthetic terrorism and committed cultural subversion, Thirlwell is one of the most independent thinkers on the music scene today, a much-needed alternative to "alternative rock" itself. Linking up with Some Bizarre in the early eighties Thirwell adopted the “Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel” moniker for the release of two of his most well know early albums “Hole” and “Nail” in ‘84 & ‘85 respectively (already re-issued by SOME BIZARRE this year!). Later adopting “FOETUS INTERRUPTUS” for the “THAW album in 1988 and “FOETUS INC.” for the “”SINK” album (collecting together rare and compilation/collaboration tracks). With a collision of electronics, tape loops and harsh beats and vocals Foetus’ albums helped define the underground industrial scene in London throughout the eighties and has remained (if indirectly) a large influence on the scenes development. With lovingly restored artwork under direct supervision from Thirwell himself these two albums are now available in deluxe digi packs which do the original LP’s artwork justice like no CD issue has ever done.
