Review:

Album: The Grid, Doppelganger (Some Bizarre)

By Simon Price - The Independent.

In the Old Rave era, long after Soft Cell had fallen apart, synth maestro Dave Ball formed the Grid with Richard Norris, and sold millions.

Their comeback album 'Doppelganger' displays all the versatility you'd expect from the man who wrote "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" and "Swamp Thing". There's an echo of the early Eighties on "Pleasure Control", there's Art of Noise-style ambience on "Closer" and "Mighty Heroik" (with Robert Fripp on "Frippertronic guitar"), and there's even Beach Boys-esque doo-wop on "Be Here with You". Grown-up, sophisticated stuff, without ever losing its sense of fun.

’Gary Lucas Vs The Dark Poets - Beyond The Pale’

8/10

(Some Bizzare) His work with Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart probably makes Gary Lucas the worlds most popular avant-rock guitarist, though his solo work can lack focus. Here, his solo pieces mingle with tracks recorded with electronic composer James R Hunter, aka The Dark Poets, whose samplescapes, synth beds and vocal samples about things like military mind-control techniques recall the dark portents of Cabaret Voltaire. Highlights include a resonant cover of part of Popol Vuhs Aguirre, Wrath of God soundtrack; an exhilarating "Judgement at Midnight" incorporating swirling National steel guitar phrases over a synth drone bed pockmarked with found-sound fragments; "Breath of Bones", a delicate tangle of guitar tendrils; and "Teds Theme", a lovely sequenced samba-shuffle burnished with glinting guitar. Solo showcases include the glistening Frippertronic-style guitar tones of "Rosemarys Baby" and the almost electric-flamenco flurries of "Rise Up To Be". Pick of the album:The Judgement at Midnight, Teds Theme, Aguirre & Rosemarys Baby.

"When it comes to eclectic  post-punk Gary Lucas Vs The Dark Poets knows where its at. Beyond The Pale, Released through Some Bizarre, is a collaboration between the Grammy nominated/one time Captain Beefheart guitarist and the British electronica outfit. The result flits between sounding like Tubeway Army remixed for the 21st century and Nick Cave playing acid-infused bluegrass."

RISQUÉ indeed is this fresh and quirky sound that strikes your heart-strings like a bolt of electro lightning! RISQUÉ's premiere release is the album TIE ME UP TIE ME DOWN is to be released SOME BIZZARE label RELEASE DATE 2008... So tune-in n chill-out to your FREE ON-LINE MUSIC trax here

Now RISQUÉ are avidly making music in their secret Barcelona studio. Their lavish sound comprises confident and robust driving rhythms, overlade with sweetly exotic and ethereal vocals.

Huw already has a well-established track-record for innovative synth production, with a concatenation of electro chart-toppers, including RUBIKON and ROOKIE.

Nathalie's (who is French as in the movie!) voice is spellbinding, somehow creating a lyrical synthesis of innocence and sensuality. Whats more, she intonates her lyrics in English and français, exuding a romantic pan-European aura.

The couple's romantic liaison, together with their music, makes a RISQUÉ story. They met on a rock off the beautiful North Wales coast. To escape any Anglo/French feuding between their parents, the duo ran away on a moonlight-flit to Las Vegas. There they were wed, in the Little Chapel of the West, where Elvis was married in Viva Las Vegas. But the sound of music beckoned from Europe, so the couple returned to immerse themselves and play, in the club and rave scenes of Paris and London.

GL1TCHG0R3 is unusual in that they are primarily a “virtual’ band formed by Ted Bell and Patrick Chauncey, conceived, executed, marketed, discovered and signed before the two band members ever actually met in person. They formed in June of 2007, and within a few weeks developed a large underground following. GL1TCHG0R3 (glitch - gore) was born out of an experiment to create a new fusion of sound somewhere between hip-hop, improvisational jazz fusion, noise, IDM and glitch. Stumped at how to proceed with this task, they invoked Eris the goddess of chaos through song, art, insanity and an organ donation. The Mother of mechanized music was indeed pleased - so pleased that she plucked out her right eye, and created the most terrifying weapon of mass destruction in the universe to take its place among us. Thus Gearball, also known affectionately as Mister Twinkles, came to become the band's whimsical cyclopean mascot. Travel with Mister Twinkles and his friends through a wild acoustic romp into the depths of cosmic chaos. And if you listen closely, betwixt the screams of the undead and alien tribal rhythms, you'll hear the dancing laughter of Eris grinding away at the humming rotors of creation.

Always good to hear something out of my comfort zone. Very impressed. Will keep an eye on this dude. favouritetrack: Deep Night (Dj Moneyshot - XFM South Wales/Various – Wales)

Kinda techy with industrial, electro, chill out overtones. I Like. Thank u for sending (Jerry Bouthier - Boom Box/Family/Kitsună© Resi-Reviewer For M8/Update/Notion – UK)

Really like this. Has a nice old skool Chicago feel to it as well as sounding very now. Great! (Neil Scott/Diablo - Nish Nash Nosh/Homoelectric/El Diablos Social Club – Manchester/Uk)

Solid release. Stand out for me is Deep Night which works on my floors. Good stuff. favouritetrack: Deep Night (TC Monckton - On @ Digital Newcastle, Wax:On @ Stylus Leeds, Arcane @ NUSU Newcastle)

Interesting. Some Bizarre is certainly an appropriate label for him. It will take a while to fully get my head round this, but i like the palate of sounds. favouritetrack: I Love Trees (Fil OK – NagNagNag/333/Various – UK)

I like the old skool sound of the beats on this. (Dan Hayes – Lock Tavern/Aitbf/Various – UK) This has got some nice grooves and sounds in it. The first track "Deep Night" is probably my favorite up tempo track here, I like what sounds like a bit of a meltdown at the end of the track. But I think the second track "Crazy BBB" and the last track "Love Trees", are my favorite tracks. The Aphex type synth sounds work well on these tracks. favouritetrack: I Love Trees (Leaf Troup - The Social/The Amersham Arms/Various – London)

Interesting ideas. Nicely done. (Anthony Vicious – Hotwerks/Various – London) Nice production. (Rob Smith – Smith & Mighty/Various – Worldwide)

Abstract! Different and good. Not commercial at all and definitely an acquired taste but I like it. Any chance of a finished album, please!!! Favourite track: CRAZY BBB (Johnny Luv - Jamm/Various - London/Surrey)

Some yellow magic orchestra shit going on somewhere here. Mad world. Favourite track: deep night (Cuban Brothers – Phatlace/Fabric – London/Cardiff/Various/Worldwide)

Good stuff. Look forward to checking the rest of the album. (Nico De Ceglia - The End/Radio 1/Various – London/Various)

Lurrrverly! Deep, without being noodly and the production is just the right side of raw. Nice one! (Capoeira Twins - Tru Thoughts/Hope -Glasgow/London/Various/Worldwide)

Interesting, diverse stuff. Good to listen to. Not sure if Id play but would be totally rinsing Crazy BBB if it was 3 mins longer! too short! Get him to make a longer version! Favourite track: Crazy BBB (Ill Will - Adventures Close to Home – London/Various)

Kontour is a British all-electronic group from the South of England. Their new album, ‘Scanners’, is being recognised as a step forward in electronic music, albeit with odd and eccentric footsteps. Containing songs about government surveillance and mass paranoia sounding like it was recorded during a nuclear war. The new fifteen-track CD is a testament to the creative work of a creative artist pushing the boundaries of music. Each song blends into the next with the continuity you’d expect from a modern day apocalyptic storyteller. The themes are reminiscent of Burroughs or Ballard approaching people’s ideals of untruths and hidden reality. The uniqueness of ‘Scanners’ can be attributed to the writer and producer David Hunt, who’s experimental approach, to the album, has created some unique and interesting sounds. Having experimented with analogue effects and tape recorders on previous recordings, he continued with that approach and ran with it into the far future. The songs were constructed from the ground up with distorted rhythm tracks and mantra basslines weaving in and out through crazed synth noise sounding like something unheard of in today’s clean digital age. Running over and under the music is the uneasy vocal of Hunt, who uses various methods to create the eerie sound of the story teller feeding you the lines to some sordid hidden secret hidden by the powers that be. The subject matter turns to the darker side of life with stories of conspiracy, fetish fantasy and abnormal emotions. Tracks like ‘Necromance’ and ‘Kennedy Syndrome’ reveal the development in music style since Kontour’s previous release. The conclusion of experimentation mixed with the uneasy vocals makes this CD an engaging listen.

Arkhaiomelisidonophunikheratos (Some Bizzare)

Reviews

Arkhaiomelisidonophunikheratos (2010). Another stunningly refreshing album by Satanicpornocultshop. I was introduced to this collective from Osaka a couple years ago and instantly fell in love with their quirky and eclectic electronica. A few years and multiple albums later, they?ve produced this a more laid back body of work that completely owns?

?Puzzling, destabilizing and futuristic hip-hop. One of the main features of this band is that they make music gush from the most arid field recording session. Give a Stanley knife or a red-bear shaped lighter to Ugh, and he?ll make it swing in a snap. Ugh is a real human sampler, a junk sound edit virtuoso. And that is undoubtedly Satanicpornocultshop main strength. Just ad to that an immense musical culture, a taste for ultimate groove and pop music satire, and you will have a pretty good idea of what makes that band so unique? - (Tim Ferguson)

ZGA is a unique phenomenon in Russian post-rock music. There’s never been a band that would for so long, so consistently and with such dogged perseverance and dedication pursue the non-compromised approach to music. ZGA pretty much equals Nick Sudnick. Throughout countless personnel changes Nick has always been there - the mind, the heart, the soul, the creator and inventor of this unparalleled music. On first listen ZGA’s music is by no means sounded obsolete but obscure it very well is: asymmetrical rhythms, hardly any melody, distorted guitar paired with Nick’s homemade instruments. The result is an apotheosis of rhythmic industrial sound. “ZGA” is a very obscure, obsolete, and peculiar Russian word. It means something really miniscule and in the contemporary language it survived only as a part of an expression "ni zgi ne vidno" - “pitch dark”. FIGS is an acronym that stands for the names of four musicians: apart from bandleaders Sudnick and Fedorova there are two drummers: Alexei Ivanov and Marcus Godwyn (a Brit who has lived in St. Petersburg for many years now).

redefining the prologue...

History of the Future...

Some Bizzare Records is a British independent record label founded by Stevø. Beginning as a DJ in London, He launched the label in 1981 with the groundbreaking LP entitled "Some Bizzare Album" which included such acts as: Soft Cell, Blancmange, Depeche Mode, B.Movie, and The The.

Some Bizzare: Redefining the prologue 1981-2006
(Universal CD)
Mike Barns (Wire Magazine)
25 years ago, Some Bizzare founder Stevo's dyslexia gave us a name that even today makes this writer fumble over its correct spelling. He also gave us music that was eclectic yet unified by being maverick, hard edged and largely electronic. There's more to it that that description, of course, and this 18 track anthology is more like a presentation than a journey through the past. This is put cheekily into context firstly with Soft Cell's "Memorabilia" - Monkey Farm Frankenstein's Mental Remix thereof - which unsentimentally ends with found speech "forget about it; it's better to have no memories." To complicate matters, MFF's own "Just another victim from 2006 sounds as if it's come from the same Some Bizzare motherload, and "Accelerate" by Meka is cut from similar cloth as Soft Cell, albeit with a meatier 21st century digital sound. Dark Poets "Crazy", another 2006 track, with its fuzz Metal chords and monomaniacally sampled voice, is a bad trip inverse of handbag house. Taking that into account, it's quite amazing that - by avoiding the cliches of the era - some of the 80s tracks sound remarkably current. Swans' "Time Is Money (Bastard)" (1985) is typically sour with cod-menacing vocals over a marching rhythm. But from the same year, Cabaret Voltaire's "Crackdown" and Einsturzende Neubauten's "Yu-Gung", with its Can-like beat -and even The The's "Twilight Of A Champion" (1983) - all sound suprisingly fresh.

Tracklisting:

1 Soft Cell Memorabilia (MMF Mental Remix) (4:12) Remix - Monkey Farm Frankenstein

2 Monkey Farm Frankenstein Just Another Victim (3:58)

3 Meka Accelerate (Yer Man Remix) (2:47) Remix - Yer Man

SCRAPING FOETUS OFF THE WHEEL

"Nail"

FIRST IN A SERIES OF DELUXE FOETUS RELATED RE-ISSUES
In an age when terms like "alternative" and "independent" get bandied about corporate boardrooms as mere mass-market packaging slogans, it takes an artist as rare as Jim Thirlwell (FOETUS) to inject some meaning into what is so casually labeled "the underground." With his history of relentless aesthetic terrorism and committed cultural subversion, Thirlwell is one of the most independent thinkers on the music scene today, a much-needed alternative to "alternative rock" itself. Linking up with Some Bizarre in the early eighties Thirwell adopted the “Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel” moniker for the release of two of his most well know early albums “Hole” and “Nail” in ‘84 & ‘85 respectively. With a collision of electronics, tape loops and harsh beats and vocals these albums helped define the burgeoning underground industrial scene in London at the time. With lovingly restored artwork under direct supervision from Thirwell himself these two albums are now available in deluxe digi packs which do the original LP’s artwork justice like no CD issue has ever done. Both albums have also been re-mastered by SCOTT HULL (Herbie Hancock, David Bowie etc.) to bring out the best in these milestone releases freeing them from the bad CD mastering these titles have suffered from in the past.

MEKA RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ON LEGENDARY LABEL SOME BIZZARE!!!
MEKA is the latest project from Max Durante and his long time collaborator Key (Ketty Boccia, Koffeebuzz). A veteran of the European dance scene Max Durante started his career in 1986 mixing Acid House and freestyle around Italy. Through his love of hip hop he began to integrate scratching into his sets and an eclectic choice of tunes. This lead him to be named “The Wizard Of The Decks”. In 1991 he began producing and since then has worked with names such as D’ARCANGELO (Reflex), DJ HELL and KEITH TUCKER releasing records on labels all over Europe. He also runs his own internet only record label “PRODAMKEY”. He has also performed at some of the most major dance festivals throughout Europe including the BIOS FESTIVAL in Athens, DISTORSONIE in Bologna & the BIT:Z FESTIVAL in Rome. MEKA was born of a collaboration between Key and Max around 1999. Since the pair has released a number of releases through their own Prodmakey imprint. However now they have made the move to legendary Dance/Industrial label SOME BIZZARE for the release of their debut album. Lead by a mix of minimalist sexy house and electronica with suggestive, distinct and sometimes risque vocals from Key. This album is the soundtrack to your sexy summer!!!
The album also includes a hard house remix of “High Heeled Shoes” by one of Ireland’s top remixers YER MAN (also available on 12” – SBZ050) as part of the bonus tracks; this amazing tune has gained loads of attention from Radio 1 and is to be played out on ANNIE MAC’s show and PETE TONG’s “Essential Selection”. Expect to hear it spinning in a club near you soon!! All this goes together to make possibly the most essential dance album of the year!!

METAL HAMMER

This techno-minded industrial duo seem bent on the marriage of creepy, mechanised atmospherics with a furious dance sensibility that sounds like a shoe-in soundtrack for a robot fight-sequence. Pumping beats, machine-like samples and howling guitars combine to create an angry sound that's both infectious and ever so slightly scary - in a good way. Short of a riot, it's doubtful you'll hear a more manic or angry sound this year.

Soul Mining.

click on album cover to buy from Genepoolgenepool link

Three years after his debut album (BURNING BLUE SOUL released in 1981), Matt Johnson resurrected the name The The, under which he had recorded an early single called "Controversial Subject", and unleashed SOUL MINING on the world. This wasa far more polished affair than its predecessor, and also amore powerful statement of purpose.
Johnson's mission isto explore the seedier underbelly of his own psyche, which is "crippled by guilt and blinded by sense" (according to the album's opening track). Elsewhere, he addresses everythingthat is wrong with society, from consumerism to easy morality, but never repetitively and always with a slinky hook (often provided by the bass guitar). Highlights include "Uncertain Smile", featuring a subtle string section and a prominent, barreling piano, the album's title track, with an eerie guitar line and pulsing xylophone, and all nine-and-a-half minutes of the disturbingly funky "Giant". The best track, however, is "This Is the Day", a deceptively cheerful sounding song, complete with accordion, that takes a lyric like "thisis the day your life will surely change" and makes the listener aware that these changes are unlikely to be good ones.

AMAZING DOUBLE CD RE-ISSUE OF 4 SWANS EARLY ALBUMS!!!

This is the digipack repressing of the double CD, with booklet and 6 page digipack...nice!

Crawling out of the same noisy, arty New York underground that sired SONIC YOUTH and LYDIA LUNCH, Swans created a dark, abrasive, murky, slowed-down noise rock that served as a starting point for their ruminations about alienation, depression, depravity, and the disturbing side of human nature. Singers Michael Gira and Jarboe have been the group's only constants over the years; Gira has taken the group from its early confrontational shock tactics to a more varied, mature attack. The band first appeared on record in 1982 with a self-titled EP, and these early releases document their search for the musical vocabulary to express their ideas effectively. Female singer Jarboe joined the group for 1986's Holy Money and brought a gentler, more relaxed dimension to Swans' sound.

“The Swans are the only band in the universe. There is no other sonic experience of such incredible power and magnitude to be found anywhere. That is an absolute fact.” - ATTITUDE (USA)

“Swans can confidently be described as nothing short of a miracle” - NME

“Swans are like some elite combat group. Abandoning conventional concepts of pitch and melody, they strip rock and roll to the barest bones. Power, urgency, excitement. This is no pose” - THE VILLAGE VOICE

Test Dept were an industrial music band formed in New Cross, London, by unemployed musicians (including Alastair Adams, Paul Jamrozy, Angus Farquhar, Graham Cunnington, Tony Cudlip, Toby Burdon and Paul Hines) from Glasgow, Scotland, where the band later re-located. Formed in 1981, they are hailed by many musicians as one of the most influential early industrial music acts. Their approach was marked out by a strong commitment to radical politics. Their discography spans a wide variety of influences and styles, including a collaboration with the South Wales Striking Miners Choir in support of the Miners' Strike of 1984. They were particularly notable for complex and powerful percussion, as well as high-energy live performances. Like the German band Einstürzende Neubauten, with whom they are often compared, Test Dept used unconventional instruments such as scrap metal and industrial machinery as sound sources; however, Test Dept's use of these objects was far more rhythmic than was Neubauten's, and was often accompanied by film and slide shows. Continuing the re-issue of their extensive back catalogue Some Bizarre present here 2 classic albums from the band’s 80’s incarnation. Both re-issued in Dig packs like the other releases on the label such as FOETUS and NEUBAUTEN. Essential for any collector of early industrial!!!

The MFF vs Evil Dead

Monkey Farm Frankenstein is a pair of young horror-obsessed malcontents who write, perform, engineer, record, program, edit, produce, mix, and master their own unique style of industrial hip hop music. Gathering samples in the dark and rainy streets of Portland, Oregon, they construct their subhuman breakbeat monster from unearthed pieces of cult horror films and dead LPs, dusty stacks of videotapes and aging analog synthesizers. The MFF invoke the hip hop influences in early Skinny Puppy and Ministry records, combining the sampledelic breakbeat sound of The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers with the funky chaos of Meat Beat Manifesto and Public Enemy. Monkey Farm Frankenstein dominate their machines, not the other way around, infusing every track with meanace and humor. Like the best horror films, the MFF balances their dark and aggressive nature with a sense of black comedy that lightens the tone and brings an audience into the fun. Combined with the pop-song structure of their songwriting, the MFF is both edgy and accessible.

COLLECTION OF DEMOS FROM THE SESSIONS OF SOFT CELL’S MULTI PLATINUM DEBUT!!
Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret was the first album released by the groundbreaking synthpop/New Wave duo Soft Cell, released in 1981 by Some Bizarre Records. The album's critical and commercial success was bolstered by the worldwide success of its single Tainted Love, a cover version of a little-known R&B song by Gloria Jones which topped charts worldwide and became the best-selling British single of 1981 in the United States. The album continued to produce a string of Top-5 singles in the UK, including "Bedsitter," "Torch," and the unapolagetically sentimental "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye."
Now the newly resurrected Some Bizarre is releasing the best of the until now unreleased demos for the sessions of the album, including an early version of the hit single “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye”. An essential addition to any Soft Cell, Grid or Marc Almond fan’s collection.
